First podium for the S-400 in Denmark

Posted on Feb 19, 2008 05:03:39 PM

The 3rd round of the five race Danish RC Model Unions (DRCMU) Winter Championships took place recently in Aarhus where the local club presented a small but nice flowing track for an event that would attract 57 competitors.
The sole representative for Serpent at the event was in the Super Stock 19T class driven by Nicolai Nielsen who was making his DRCMU debut with the new S400.

During the practice day drivers had time to get to know the track and find a good setup for the following day’s racing which was an ideal opportunity for Nicolai to get more familiar with his new drive. From the start the S400 worked well allowing its driver to concentrate on finding good pace and speed.
The races are run as Round by Round with two out of three to count. In the first qualifying heat it started out very well. Nicolai ran a good and safe heat taking the second fastest time in the round.
The second round was very tight with four of the Top 5 drivers in the round within one second of each other! Nicolai was keeping up the pace and done his best time of 27/5.00.89 to take third spot.
In the final round Nicolai was unfortunate to make a few small mistakes, but still being able to keep a Top 5 place of the round.
This gave him a starting position of second on the grid for the A-main just behind the Super Stock 19T class TQ man Carsten Madsen.
The first A-main started very well for Nicolai and his S-400. During the first few laps he was able to put some pressure on the leader Madsen. About half way through the heat an unfortunate incident took place. A back maker misjudged the speed and distance of Nicolai the pair had an unavoidable collision. This resulted in a twisted chassis and two bent rear shock tower mounts which forced a DNF.
The start of the second final was very much like the first, Nicolai was putting pressure on Carsten for the opening laps. Then Carsten was able to make a little gap and the two drivers cruised to for the finish with Carsten taking his second win to claim overall honours.
The third leg saw Nicolai again finish second to secure the overall runners up spot for Round 3 after which the Serpent drivers finds himself at the top of the championship standings.
Commenting after the race Nicolai said of the S400, ‘The car worked very well all weekend. I haven’t really made any large changes on the car compared to the kit version. The biggest change was to run with the gear diff in the rear and this works really well.’
With only two rounds left Nicolai is leading the championship, ‘Now I just hope I can keep the momentum and stable running so that I can fight for the victory all the way to the end. I’m really look forward to the final races in March.’ he said.
Next outing for Nicolai and his S-400 will be the 4th round of the DRCMU Winter Championship taking place on the first weekend in March in Tinglev, Denmark.
